Founded in 1778, Abingdon has long been a center for the cultural arts. With buildings dating back to the 18th century, Abingdon features a twenty block historic district that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors enjoy strolling past these great old buildings on the brick-lined sidewalks.
Abingdon is home to the world-famed Barter Theatre, The State Theatre of Virginia - that counts Gregory Peck, Ernest Borgnine and Patricia Neal among its many alumni. In its early days, the Barter Theatre got its name from the practice of trading produce and food for the price of admission. Today the Barter is in production from January through December and offers professional theatrical productions on two stages.
Abingdon has accommodations in every price range and features over a dozen quaint and charming bed and breakfasts, the historic Martha Washington Inn, and plenty of nationally known hotels.
