Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites

Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites hosts 13 million visitors a year. A division of the Department of Natural Resources, Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites manages 63 state parks and historic sites scattered throughout Georgia. Together, historic sites and state parks in Georgia invite visitors to explore American history and to enjoy the great outdoors in a variety of settings.

Perhaps the best known of Georgia's 15 state historic sites is the Little White House, the home that Franklin Roosevelt built near Warm Springs the same year that he was first elected president of the U.S. Other historic sites in Georgia include the Picketts Mill Battlefield Historic Site, among the best remaining Civil War battlefields, and the Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site, remarkable for its traces of a Native American community that existed centuries before the Europeans discovered America.

State parks under the jurisdiction of the Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites encompass forests and marshes, waterfalls and lakes, mountains and canyons. One of Georgia's state parks, Tallulah Gorge State Park, is home to a two-mile-long gorge that's considered to be among the finest in the eastern United States. Outdoor activities offered through the Historic Sites and State Parks in Georgia are every bit as varied as the terrain. Visitors may enjoy year-round golf, tennis, biking, birding, fishing and boating, swimming, horseback riding, picnicking, hiking, backpacking and camping. Accommodations at Georgia's state parks range from lodges to cottages to campgrounds. Small groups who relish the idea of leaving their vehicles behind may appreciate Amicalola Falls State Park, which features an eco-lodge accessible only after a five-mile-hike. Group shelters and picnic shelters are also available throughout state parks in Georgia.
